Monitoring your pet's health is critical, as they may not show outward signs of illness.
Our team might recommend your pet have bloodwork done for a few reasons, including routine wellness exams, before surgery or if we need a closer look at what’s going on inside your pet’s body. The thought of blood being taken from a furry family might be daunting but our team of veterinarians and veterinary technologists are well-trained to ensure the process is over before your pet knows it! If your pet is scheduled to have bloodwork done and you have questions about the process, please contact our team at 604-858-4415.
Bloodwork is one of the diagnostic tools we use to get an accurate reading of your pet’s internal health. When your pet is sick or injured, whatever is affecting them might not manifest as signs or symptoms outside their body. Bloodwork might be recommended with other procedures like X-rays or ultrasound imaging to help us explore what’s happening in their body.
Bloodwork helps us establish a baseline for your pet’s health. It can identify specific diseases that can be treated in the early stages or provide insight into their overall health. It detects your pet’s red and white blood cell count, which indicates the health of their immune system. Also, certain chemical levels show us how well your pet’s organs are working.
The time varies, depending on the type of analysis. One of the benefits of our on-site laboratory is that it performs most blood chemistries, electrolytes, hematology, urinalysis, bacteriology, and heartworm and other parasite testing. This allows us to provide rapid diagnostics daily as well as for emergencies at any time of the day or night. For special diagnostic tests, we courier samples twice a day.
